If you were to asks a large population of different ethnic background, income, and education; you would get different meanings of the word "Culture" in fact most would give you the definition of Ethnicity. Culture is defined as: "the totality of socially transmitted behavior patterns, arts, beliefs, institutions, and all other products of human work and thought" (http://www.starware.com) Ethnicity is defined as: "Ethnic character, origin, background, or affiliation."(http://www.starware.com). It is easy to see how people mistakenly give you the definition of ethnicity when asked what culture is.

During my travels to other countries I have come across many Americans; they usually asks me where I am from and how long I have lived in the country where we met. It is not difficult to identify an American in other countries; he/she will be the one that is dressed differently than the rest of the crowd. From these travels I have seen first hand the different cultures of Europe, Asia, and the Pacific Islands. My definition of the American Culture is a melting pot and mosaic of other cultures. American culture is made up of bits and pieces of other countries' cultures which have come together. Our culture is based around everyone's right to express themselves however they want. Symbols of this aspect of culture are places like China Town and Little Italy in most of the major cities. However there is no such thing as the "American Culture." There are too many different cultures that make up the American population that there really is not one generic culture that can be labeled to the public. Unlike Germany the official language is German, Italy is Italian, and France is French; America has no official language; although English is the national spoken language. Culture could be determined on your location. For example if you go to North Houston you will enter a community of Hispanics. They speak Spanish when ordering food at local eating establishments or even while talking to store employees. If you drive 30 minutes to the Southwest and enter the Bellaire Region you would notice that the Public language is Asian; even the Streets are listed in some form of Asian language. English use to be the spoken language many years ago, but politics has changed that. When you buy a new computer, stereo, or anything else it explains the directions in all major languages that are used in the United States.

The Middle East is a good example of an area where its people are prisoners of their culture. They have laws that prohibit change, some of these laws are the denial of education for females; females driving automobiles; females exposing skin; not being able to practice whatever faith they want to believe in; and the introduction
