Walking two Moons takes place in the early 1980s or 1990s, the setting mostly takes place on the road from Ohio and Idaho. The main character is Salamanca Tree Hiddle, who is a thirteen year old girl.
Sal and her grandparents go on a road trip to Lewiston, Idaho. Sal's mother had died the year before in a bus accident there, and she wanted to see the site of the accident. She hopes by visiting the site on her mother's birthday that she will be able to bring her back.
Along the way Sal, tells her grandparents the story of her best friend , Phoebe, whose mother, like Sal's, unexpectedly decides to leave home. Sals meets Phoebe when Sal and her father leave their farm and move to Ohio.
During the trip with her grandparents Sal realizes the complexity of her own mothers decision to leave home. When they have almost reached the site of the accident , Sal's grandmother falls ill, and Sal must drive the car down the treacherous slopes to the accident place herself.
Once at the site of the bus crash , she accepts the impossibility of bringing her mother back. when she returned to car, there is a police officer waiting for her. After hearing her story, he does not arrest her. Instead he drives her back into town, where her grandparents are. She then find outs that the grandmother has passed away.
At the end of the story Sal and her father return to their farm trying to rebuild their lives with out her mother. Sal, who has made peace with her mother's tragic death, looks forward to each day on the farm and to the upcoming visit of all her friends from Ohio.
