Stakeholder Scenario
In the healthcare industry administrators play an important role in making decisions for the benefit of the organizations and for the welfare of the patients. They must work within the constraints of the regulations, funding, politics and mission of their organizations. Here we are trying to implement a new procedure for the surgery and as part of that implementing a new medication prior to the surgery that benefits the hospital as well as the patients. Researches indicate that the new medication will reduce the post surgery infection by 45% and also the new medication will helps to save the hospital $28,000 annually.
Here we are considering the opinion of pharmacists, nurses, physician and financial analysts because they are involved in the process. In the opinion of pharmacist, the medication is really good as it reduces the post surgery infection by 47% and it saves a lot of money and saves time too. Nurses are fine, as it is beneficial for the patients, though they are a bit concerned about the additional workload due to the change in the procedure. Surgeon seems to be little upset about the new implementation as he was unwilling to accept a change in his 30 years of experience in medical practice, which has got a good success rate. The role of the financial analyst of an organization is to save money, so he is impressed with the new implementation as it is going to save around $28,000 annually for the hospital.
As an Administrator of this hospital, my role is to listen to all the concerns and feedbacks of all the stake holders about the new antibiotic. Since the new medication is has good benefits for the patients as well as the hospital, I need to discuss this further with all the stake holders and try to convince them.
After further discussions, pharmacist and pre-op nurse agreed to the fact that it will reduce the post operation wound infection and it will be a benefit for the patients and for the hospital. Surgeon is the only person that is partially opposing the decision as it will change his practice that he has been doing for the past 30 years. Since the researches and evidence shows that there is a significant benefit for the antibiotic, surgeon is also ready to take a new step for the welfare of the patients.
