How do sources A, B and C show support for the war in Vietnam?
Source A is an extract taken from a speech made by President Johnson outlining the reasons why America became involved in the Vietnam war. He is president and his job is to control his actions of Americas role in the Vietnam war.
The video clip begins with a news reporter stating how the U.S were determined to prevent the spread of communism. She also stressed that by 1967, half a million U.S service men were fighting in Vietnam.
"Why Vietnam". This phrase was repeated three times by president Johnson, shouting! Its a rhetorical question which pursues a confident and sure attitude towards audience in which he wanted to produce a positive outlook on the war in Vietnam.
"Why must young Americans born into a land exalted with hope and golden promise, toil suffer and sometimes die, in such a remote distant pace?"
He admitted that the question was not easy, just like the war itself. This source shows support for the war.
Source B is an extract taken from a book
"No hail, No farewell" by Louis Heren, who was an English writer. His opinions in the book are expressed in a factual way. He tells readers about the time he spent in America in 1967. The source begins by telling readers about the demonstrations being a minority. We learn that some young people went across to Canada to avoid being sent to a military action in Vietnam.
"The overwhelming majority did what was required of them." This basically means that young U.S men wanted to fulfill their duty, of military service to fight for freedom this source implies that such acceptance was common place "a group of young men were boarding a bus for a military induction center". The young men were going out on a compulsory duty as their fathers done. Source B states that there is support for Vietnam war.
Source C consists of statistics, dates and figures taken from defense department, quoted in N.Smith: The USA 1917-1980 1996. In 1962 was the beginning of the war and in 1973 was the ceasefire. 1962, 9000 troops were sent to Vietnam, 1963, 1500.
