Do you feel safe as you walk into this high school everyday? If you don't it wouldn't surprise me because in 1990 one in every twenty high school students have carried a gun to school. Recently in this year of November 24 a high school boy brought a gun to school and shot off 12 rounds at his classmates. Several students were injured and 1 student was killed. This event came from the result of a school fight earlier that week between the shooter and another student. If you do not live a life of fear at school then that is good, but remember someday a distressed teenager may take a gun from home and walk into your school undetected as a carrier with a firearm and unload his weapon on you and your classmates.

I hope that by the time I am done today you will agree with me that something must be done in order to protect the student body at all schools from the threat of violence

This shows that it is way too easy to bring a gun to school if a student wanted to. There is a solution to this problem. A mandatory law must be passed that requires all firearms of any type to have a standard safety lock on the trigger guard. Another way and more effective way would be to lock all firearms in a gun safe that is hard to get into without a key or the correct combination.

In Los Angeles all schools have passed laws requiring metal detector inspection on all students as they proceed into the school. With this law in place the amount of school shootings has dropped down 50 percent. Some students say it is a pain to be scanned everyday before school, but all admit that they would rather take one minute out of their daily routine
