All natural vitamins are found on most living things, however, humans cannot produce them. While some plants and animals create their own vitamins, we have to rely on dietary supplements to fulfill our needs. This is why we need to consume this important nutrient, in order to prevent deficiencies. Vitamin C helps our immune system become stronger, it helps with some aspects of the brain, and the best thing is that you can also find it in many fruits and vegetables.
One of the best qualities of vitamin C, is that it energizes and supports the immune system. You should take at least 90mg of this nutrient per day, to improve your immune system’s functioning. For optimal functioning, experts recommend 1,000mg, plus a diet rich in fruits and vegetables. By taking this dose daily, you can reduce the risks of getting a common cold, however, if you do get it, the symptoms won’t be as bad as those of a person with poor vitamin C levels in their system. This nutrient will also reduce the duration of a cold.
As well as helping our immune system, Vitamin C also helps with some aspects of our brain. It has been a surprising discovery for researchers in the Oregon Health & science University, to find out that Vitamin C may be needed for the correct functioning of the retinal cells, since these are part of the nervous system. In addition, it can also help to prevent Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s, by helping prevent the buildup of toxins in the brain, and assists in building the elastic tissue collagen that keeps the arteries flexible for the proper flow in the brain. Having Vitamin C deficiency leads to a condition called scurvy, which one of its common symptoms is depression.
