With VOIP technology coming into play there are several advantages and disadvantages to consider. Advantages include lower cost, increased functionality, and freer innovation. As far as drawbacks go there are also a few to consider, such as reliability, emergency calls, integration into existing technology and a single point of calling.

There are several main advantages to VOIP service. The first one to discuss is the overall lower cost. VOIP has several things going for it to help reduce cost primarily that it uses a single network to carry both voice and data. What also assists in keeping the cost down is that since the calls go through the internet, many companies offer unlimited calling for both domestic, as well as international calls (http://ordervoip.com/comparison.php?PromoCode=127821). Another advantage is increased functionality. This includes the ability to transport your VOIP phone anywhere that you go, and as long as you have an internet connection, you would still have the ability to make and receive calls. This can be particularly valuable in a call center type of environment, as you can have agents connected wherever there is an internet connection, which could include their homes. Lastly innovation is a lot freer to develop in the VOIP world. The VOIP industry isn't hampered by the rules and regulations that most large and even small telecommunications have to abide by.

With all the advantages that VOIP technology provides there are also disadvantages to consider when implementing a VOIP communications system. The primary thing to consider is reliability. Most existing telephone networks are powered by the telephone company using power from a central office/exchange, so that as long as you have a phone that doesn't require power (cordless phones) you are still able to place calls; this includes when the power is out at your home. With VOIP technology it relies upon a connection to the internet. In the event of a power outage or an internet network outage, you would be without a phone. This could potentially be very critical if an emergency were to arise. Also with the ability for a telephone call to be generated from any internet connection, emergency personnel could take much longer to find the origin of a caller.
