Oliver Hazard Perry- oversaw the construction of a small fleet. He led the forces in the Battle of Lake Erie.
Battle of Lake Erie- was led by Captain Oliver Hazard Perry. Lasted 3+ hours and both sides suffered heavy casualties. British surrendered.
Battle of the Thames- US troops led by General Harrison charged into British defenses. Indians suffered heavy casualties. Indian forces retreated. This broke British power in the Northwest and secures the Canadian border. Tecumseh killed in the battle.
Red Eagle- Chief Red Eagle led the Creek forces in the Battle of Horseshoe Bend. He surrendered to American forces.
Battle of Horseshoe Bend- led by Chief Red Eagle. Indians had many wounded or killed. Red Eagle surrendered and the Creeks lost millions of acres of land.
Andrew Jackson- American General who was in command of the U.S. forces around New Orleans. He was also in control of the forces at Horseshoe Bend.
Battle of New Orleans- January 8, 1815. It was lead by General Jackson with 4,500 American troops against 5,300 British troops. In 30 minutes 2000 British soldiers were killed or wounded compared to the less than 100 the US had.
Hartford Convention- This was a protest against war. Delegates wanted New England states out of the war. Sent a delegation to meet President Madison. War ended before the delegation met him.
Treaty of Ghent- this ended the War of 1812. After months of frustrating negotiations, diplomats decided to end war. Conquered territory restored. No solution to impressments or trade embargoes.
1. The Battle of Erie occurred in the area of the Great Lakes. The British frigate, Guerriere fought against the USS Constitution.
2. The war progressed mostly by land skirmishes and it came to an end with the US slaughtering the British at the Battle of New Orleans.
5. it's called that because the US had to fight from being invaded again. We fought for our freedom from impressments.
