Equality

1. What is equality?

Equality is the state or quality of being essentially equal or equivalent: equally balanced. The equal treatment of people irrespective of social or cultural differences. Other meaning is the quality of being the same in quantity or measure or value or status. By the law is the possessing the same rights under the same circumstances. So that means that all persons are equal before the law and are entitled without any discrimination to the equal protection of the law.

Equality can mean several things. As a:

In sciences:

* Equality (mathematics) - equal sign is the symbol used to indicate logical or mathematical equality

* Equality (objects) - objects are considered equal if they are precisely the same in every way.

In humanities:

* Egalitarianism - is the belief that everyone is equal

* Equality of outcome - also known as equality of condition, is a form of egalitarianism, which seeks to reduce or eliminate differences in material condition between individuals or households in a society. This usually means equalizing income and/or total wealth to some degree.

* Equality of opportunity - is an absence of discrimination, based on race, colour, age, gender, national origin, religion, or mental or physical disability. Equal chance to an education and employment, and to protect their civil rights.

* Equality of treatment - All persons are treated the same by the person or organization of interest. On the other hand, strict equal treatment would mean that, for example, everyone is expected to be able to walk stairs, which would mean some handicapped and elder people couldn't use a building.

* Racial equality - desegregation - the action of incorporating a racial or religious group into a community

* Sexual equality - is the belief in the equality of the gender or the sexes. Equalists seek to promote the rights of females, males, and everything in between.

* Social equality - is a social state of affairs in which certain different people have the same status in a certain respect, at the very least in voting rights, freedom of speech and assembly, and the extent of property rights.

2. Equality and its meaning for us

Equality focuses on those areas covered by the law, namely the key areas of race, gender, disability and more recently religion or belief, sexual orientation and age. A recent amendment to the Race Relations Act adds a duty for us to actively promote race equality and avoid race discrimination, by acting before it happens.
