What is Music?

According to the dictionary, music is, “Vocal or instrumental sounds combined in such a way as to produce beauty of form, harmony, and expression of emotion.” This subject is underestimated and overlooked sometimes because people prefer to look at the general stereotype of that genre.  Music can be defined in a variety of ways. Although most generic definitions are correct, I believe there is no single sentence long enough to describe music as a whole. Music is a profession, a lesson, and even a therapy. It can be used for communication, entertainment, emotions, spiritual healing, and even religion.

Music is everywhere. No matter where you go, despite how technologically advanced the area you are in is, music, sounds, or patterns are incorporated somehow. Music allows emotions of happiness and sadness to take place. From those emotions, physical effects, negative or positive, can occur. Music has proven to cause effect on the emotional, social, intellectual, and physical aspects of a person.

Emotions are easily affected by the things around you. Music can prevent you from feeling certain emotions of sadness, grief, joy, and even happiness. There are several different aspects of music that change how a song is interpreted. From these interpretations come emotions. There are an enormous amount of factors that come into play when either creating music, or even playing around with different tempos making beats. I believe the tempo plays the largest part among all. If you have a slow solemn tempo, the emotional appeal will be most likely sad, depressed, or in most cases, related to love or heartbreak. If a song is meant to be happy, the tempo is quick and light. If the intention of a song is to tell a story, the tempo may jump meaning slow down and then pick back up or vice versa.

Music is my life. Without music I would have missed out on not only entertainment, but knowledge as well. The way you describe music may be different from others but that does not make it wrong. Music is the therapeutic way to life. Music is its own healing in which it plays a story that can be interpreted to fit the listener. Where would we be without music?
