Ð''Explain why the U.S withdraw its forces from Vietnam in 1973'
There were various reasons, which influenced America's involvement in Vietnam. Twenty years before America became involved in Vietnam (known the as indo china), it was under French occupation and had a population of 20 000 000 (twenty million people). However after France's defeat by the Germans in June 1940 it made it very difficult for the French to keep control of indo-china. This fuelled Japanese intentions to extend its influence in South East Asia, in order to control the vital and profitable materials it had (such as; rice, corn, coal and rubber). In July 1941France agreed to allow Japan to occupy the rest of Ð''French indo-china'. The Japanese ruled for four years, but in 1945 France re-occupied indo-china after their defeat in the Second World War. The U.S interest
in Vietnam was geared by the "Domino theory" This theory relied upon the basis that the countries of South East Asia were closely linked together. If one fell to communism so would the surrounding countries. China became communist in 1949, North Korea and North Vietnam also had communist governments. America saw this as a serious up and coming threat.
America felt that Vietnam was the only country which could physically act to prevent the threat of ever increasingly spreading communism. It was for this reason that Vietnam became the cold war front line state for Asia, as Germany did for Europe.
Once involved in the the Vietnam war, (for eight years) and the high fatality rate of American soldiers (400 000). A meetin sich as "The Geneva Conference" was held in may 1954, the attending countries were; Britain, The Soviet Union, France, China, United States and Vietnam. Here it was discussed that;
Ð'* Vietnam would be divided temporarily in two along the 17th parallel- the North under Ngo Dinh Diem.
America found itself increasingly involved in a war it could not win,yet could not get out of.
