Three Little Words, by Ashley Rhodes-Courter, tells the story of a young girl who searches for adoption as she has been removed from her biological mother's custody. The author thoroughly describes her journey and struggles with foster care. Rhodes-Courter delivers the message of the importance of family and hope. Her main point is never lose hope as the unconditional love of a family will always find its way. As Ashley walks through her worst moments in foster care, the reader is able to relate and sympathize with the author and pull out the most important message of the novel.
Ashley Rhodes-Courter changes significantly throughout the course of the book. Her major motive was Marjorie Moss---the manipulating "wicked witch of the west." As a result of Marjorie's maltreat with children, Ashley, along with Mrs. Moss's abundant amount of foster kids boiled up with hopelessness for their future. For instance, "I felt as worthless as the junk in my trash bag...once again, I was the one being tossed out and thrown away." This quote from the story instantly reveals a pessimistic tone. Allowing the reader to infer that the character is slowly losing hope. But, despite Mrs. Moss's abuse, Ashley was able to regain optimism.
Reading this book made me think whole different way about promises, the government, and foster care. Many times in my life I had promises broken, I think we have all had. But, Courter definitely reached the high score. I don't understand why it still shocks me to know there are so many criminals who make themselves pass as saints. Criminals such as Mrs. Moss. Courter's main message motivates me to give children the same hope she gave them. Overall, I enjoyed reading this memoir and I recommend it to anyone out there losing hope.
