In the essay, "Why We Crave Horror Movies" by Stephen King the author tries to prove that the modern day horror movie is are relief of violence, are fix of adrenaline and fun, and also something that can dare the nightmare. In a lot of ways these things can be related to real life situations. My relief of violence is playing video games, and my fix of fun and adrenaline is when I play football, and something that dares my nightmare is when I challenge my brother.
In the essay, "Why We Crave Horror Movies", Steven King explains that the modern day horror movie is our relief for violence it is what feeds the gator. He uses horror movies because of there violent nature. We all need to be able to step outside life's boundaries and certain horror movies can do this for us. It can let us see things that in normal everyday life cannot be possible. In the essay Steven say's, "We are told we may allow our emotions a free rein."(444) Trying to hint that a good horror movie can do this for us. But horror films are not the only thing that can feed the gator. For me it is when I turn on that video game and I can break all the rules of life. I know I can do whatever I want and still have the security of just turning the game off and going back to real life. Playing video games is my outlet to life. I can take a gun on the game and let out all the frustration of life and not worry about the consequences. But there are many things that can feed gator and for you it may be something the opposite of a horror film or video game.
Also in the essay the author explains that the modern day horror movie brings us fun and adrenaline. Depending on the type of horror movie it is, it will bring you both of these things. It will bring you fun just for the fact that you're at the movies and it's going out and usually hanging out wit your friends and it will bring you adrenaline because of the share fact of being scared. Steven King compares the horror movie to a roller coaster saying," Which is not to say that a really good horror movie may not surprise a scream out of us at some point, the way we may scream when the roller coaster twists through a complete 360..."(443). I get my fun and adrenaline in a different way though, I get it through football. The way I feel on the first play of the game is the same way that one might feel as they first sit down at the horror movie that they been longing to see. I can feel all the blood rushing through my body, and I get excited because I do not know what awaits me, and I do not know what's around the corner. I can feel the danger of it I know that I can get hurt but yet I push on because I need the adrenaline that it gives me. The same way that one would push on in a horror film they would not get up and just leave they would stay for the excitement and reward, and that is why I stay; for the reward. I want to know that I concurred my opponent, that I looked at my fear and I faced it.
Which is the next thing that Steven King says horror films does for us. As he says, "When we pay our four or five bucks and seat ourselves at tenth-row center in a theatre showing a horror movie we are daring the nightmare."(443).As
