This passage is about a man named Wimsey who is experiencing and touring a bell tower whilst it is chiming. The passage follows the journey of Wimsey as he enters the belfry and then continues on climbing up the belfry. From reading the text the time period is very hard to determine but just by the description of the bell tower and also some of the description used to describe the feelings in which Wimsey experiences, suggests that the time period of this passage is somewhat medieval. Also the constant recurrence of medieval tools such as swords and hammers coincide with such an idea. From understanding the time period of this passage we can also come up with a vague idea of the physical and geographical location which we can determine as being somewhere in Europe where bell towers which are very common. Lastly the emotional setting in which is evident in the passage is complete pain and somewhat torture. These are present in which the writer describes Wimsey as experiencing. Firstly this is demonstrated on the fifth line through the use of a simile, where Wimsey explains the sound of the bells feeling like a thousand beating hammers. This portrays complete torture and really demonstrates how Wimsey was feeling throughout the experience. The second evidence in which portrays the pain in which Wimsey experiences is evident on the tenth line where the writer states, "... one high note, shrill and sustained, that was like a sword" This simile once again conveys the pain in which Wimsey experiences.
Right throughout the passage there is this constant feel of all the different pains in which wimsey's experiences. But the part on which really shows the dramatic effect the bells had on whimsy is on the fourteenth line where the text states , "his senses swarm away" this represents complete dehumanization as it shows that the pain and the effect of bells is taking away his senses and his feeling of being a human being.
Wimpey's situation is conveyed by the pain he experiences and the description of how he is feeling. One line in which represents this is line thirteen where the text states, "It was a brute pain, a grinding, bludgeoning, ran-dan, crazy, intolerable torment" This sentence sums up exactly how whimsy is feeling and the situation in which he is in really shows the extreme pain and torture the belfry had on him.
Tension and menace is also apparent in the text and is created by the war
