I think that most of my picks did well. Looking at just the percentage gained or lost OSI Restaurant Partners, Inc. (OSI) did the best. I am not for sure what was the driving factor in their increase. With the exception of US BioEnergy (USBE), the companies pay a good dividend yield when compared to their industry averages.
The worst investment was USBE. The stock dropped over 13%. I think that it was due to lower oil prices. The stock hasn't been listed for very long either, since December, so that might have had some effect.
I think that I got lucky when I was picking my stocks because I didn't research any of them. That is something I would change. I also learned to look at the dividends that the companies are paying as a way to increase the value of my investment. Another thing I learned, after picking USBE, is that an investor has to be patient and be in it for the long haul.
I think that I would invest in all six of the companies that I picked for the assignment. I think that the companies are solid companies and they have good dividend yields. I would chose USBE just because they are young and the government is mandating increases in the use of ethanol. If they continue to go down I can always use it to offset some of my future gains.
Another company that looked good was Anheuser Busch. Their stock is steady and their 5 year average dividend yield was 1.90 percent.
