When writing papers for English class, and any other assignment that requires me to analyze anything, much of my own identity is hidden. What I mean is that when I write, my opinion is just one third of the essay. My goal is not to put in my writing voice, but to complete the task; unless of course, it is an autobiography or an essay asking for my opinion. I came to America when I was six years old. At then, no one in my family knew how to speak English and how the American culture works. I was the first person in my family to learn English. I believe that because I was at such a young age, the common culture for me would be the American culture. I was never familiar with Chinese, I had left china before I fully understand how the Chinese culture. It could have been different if I came to America as a teenager or adult. But instead, I was taught to accomplish assignments, complete what was to be asked only. If it asks for your opinion, then answer only with your opinion. The writing in a person's work is much different. In corporations such as "Microsoft", "Best Buy", etcetera, many workers see their company as a "we", thus their voice is completely subverted. In my experience, when I call customer support for DSL, or anything else, the representative usually ends the phone call with "We are glad that we were able to help you." Or something similar to this.
