Great Depression- the severe economic slump that followed the collapse of the U.S. stock market in 1929, WW1
New Deal- U.S. president Franklin Roosevelt's economic reform program designed to solve the problems created by the Great Depression
Weimar Republic- the republic that was established in Germany in 1919 and ended in 1933, the Weimar Republic had serious weaknesses from the start. The Germans blamed this government for their defeat.
Nazism- the fascist policies of the National Socialist German workers' party, based on totalitarianism, a belief in racial superiority, and state control of industry.
Communism- an economic system in which all means of production: land, mines, factories, railroads, and businesses; are owned by the people, private property does not exist, and all goods and services are shared equally.
Mein Kampf- while in jail, Hitler wrote Mein Kampf ("My Struggle"). This book set forth his beliefs and his goals for Germany. Hitler asserted that the Germans, whom he incorrectly called the "Aryans", were a "master race".
Fascism- a political movement that promotes an extreme form of nationalism, a denial of individual rights, and a dictorial one-party rule
Imperialism- a policy in which a strong nation seeks to dominate other countries politically, economically, or socially
Axis Powers- Germany, Italy, & Japan
Allied Powers- Great Britain, France, U.S., & Russia
Third Reich- German Empire
Francisco Franco- army leaders joined him in a revolt, it began the civil war
Non-Aggression Pact- promise not to attack each other between Britain & France
Albert Einstein- German born physicist, he theorized the speed of light is constant & relative motion
Democratic Governments- a government ruled by the people
Appeasement- the making of concessions to an aggression in order to avoid a war
Technology after WWI- poison gas, machine gun, tank & submarine
Winston Churchill- British prime minister told them to do the Battle of Britain
Charles de Gaulle- French general who set up government in exile in London
Blitzkrieg- they attacked by air, boat, & land all at the same time
