Columbus faced many challenges in his attempt to secure a new route to the east, his ships frequently ran out of food and water in the middle of journeys, and disease was also a major problem that explorers had to contend with at that time. Columbus also had financial issues because voyages were rather expensive. He also encountered munity which was a major setback. Soon after Columbus' discovery, the Western Hemisphere became an area for exploitation and settlement, and became a route on the Triangle slave trade. The Bahamian local population of Lucayans was destroyed and the remaining Lucayans were herded away as slaves to work in gold mines and pearl fisheries. Disease also set in as the Lucayans had no immunity to the viral European diseases. In addition many of them committed suicide to avoid captivity. Europeans were looking for resources. Such as Gold, Fish, Fur, Gems, Wood, Sugar, Tea and spices. Mostly they wanted immense treasure like gold. The voyages were prompted because of Trade, it was all about money they sought to set out find new goods to sell to an expanding economy. This is where we find Prince Henry who had a fascination in these maritime adventures he sent out expert to Portugal West Africa and some Atlantic islands for rare metals and rare spices. This is where you find many advances in maps and navigation. The advance in ships was what led to this being possible.
