David Berkowitz was born on June 1, 1953. He was adopted into the Berkowitz family, and his original name was Richard Falco. His birth mother had to put him up for adoption because she had an affair with a married man, named Joseph Kleinman, who said that he would support her family if she gave the baby up (meaning David) for adoption. Nat and Pearl Berkowitz adopted David Berkowitz, because they couldn't have children of their own. "In 1967 Pearl Berkowitz died of cancer - David was 14 years old." (Altered Dimensions.net) Until 1971, David was raised by his father, Nat then remarried. His new wife was disturbed by David, and "...Nat and his bride moved to Florida, leaving the 18 year old David on his own in the Bronx." (Altered Dimensions.net) The same year, he joined the army. In 1974 he went back home, and knowing that he was adopted, he decided to find out who his real parents were. David then contacted his mom, once he found out his original name using the Bureau of Records. David learned that his birth mom, Betty Falco, also had a girl named Roselyn Falco, which was David's sister. He visited Betty and Roselyn, but "gradually, during the course of 1975, they began to drift apart again until he no longer had any contact with them." (Altered Dimensions.net) "This was shortly before the first crime and Josyln, David's sister, was already becoming worried about David who frequently complained of massive headaches" (Altered Dimensions.net)
