INTRODUCTION

‘’Late goals are part of our DNA’’
                                                    -The Daily Star

Quote mentioned above is the headline of a European club football related article in The Daily Star published on 5th of December, 2106.Although daily updates about European club football occupy a major portion of the sports section of famous news paper like The Daily Star, Prothom alo, The Independent, Dhaka Tribune etc still there are number of people unfamiliar with the term “European club football” along with the impacts it has in the life of general mass. In a national TV interview “ Kheladhula’’, when young generation were asked which sports they prefer to follow the most, 8 out of 15 of them said European club football as it takes less time than cricket to follow plus when you watch a game for more than 3hours straight, it might get boring. Here they failed to recognize, a football league goes throughout the year taking 90mins away from their life in regular basis.

European club football is simply the game of football played by different clubs of European nations mostly inside Europe, sometimes worldwide. It might seem what harm can watching a football can do or it might seem it has no negative affect over students but this whole idea is proved false. There is no harm in following the game if  it is done responsibly but responsibility is a big idea and often lack in students.

Everyday popularity of foreign club football especially European club football is increasing among the students of Dhaka. There are number of football tournaments taking place in Dhaka organized by students inspired by the idea of European football.  Due to its massive popularity and competitions of European football, leagues are organized in many of the countries if not most of the countries in the world. The leagues also have various divisions. There are a lot fan bases in many countries supporting foreign teams of foreign leagues. Leagues like English Premier League, German Bundes Liga, Spanish La Liga, Italian Serie A are attracting the major portion of the football fan base in our country.

The focus of my research will be to identify if European club football is affecting the academic as well as social life of male university students in Dhaka. Alongside, paper will also focus if the life of students is affected financially which in turn affects the social or academic life of students.

Background

Former English club coach Fowler (2012) said ‘’Football is nothing but just a sports which should not effect students negatively is not a right statement to make’’. He said this in an interview basing on his personal life as his daughter were doing doctorate in human resource management where as his only son just graduated high school and got into football academy.  Although, he was happy with the decision of his son but decision like this in our society or country will just bring shame for the family.

Beside popularity of European club football is increasing everyday among university students undoubtedly. One of the main reasons for this increasing popularity is the early kickoff of games which is traditionally 3 pm in England which would broadcast at 8 pm or 9 pm in Bangladesh. According to Yueh (2014), “Audiences have increased significantly because the early morning kick off times don't conflict with the schedules of baseball, basketball, etc”. It is said in perspective of England but in case of Bangladesh it is the prime time for a student to study at home.
