In order to ensure that cases involving discrimination are presented fairly and accurately in the
media several most important precautions must be taken. There should be no manipulation of
terms, no misleading illustrations and the person being advertised or exploited should give
consent before any airing/printing/recording etc. By making sure that terms are used properly,
anything to describe an individual should be accurate. Often times, the media will improperly
characterize someone in order to exaggerate and appeal to a certain audience; however, this
could lead to false advertisement. For Example, magazines may quote a "source" and add in
terms that did not come from that particular source. In addition to this aspect of false
advertisement is misleading pictures. The media is notorious for altering and photoshopping
images of individuals to make them smaller, lighter, darker, more attractive, less attractive, and
many other misleading depictions. This can easily throw off an audience or reader and cause
one to think of whomever is being illustrated in the wrong way. To avoid all of these inaccurate
advertisements, the indivuidual who is being illustrated, written or reported about should always
be required to give written consent the illustrator, editor, reporter, or whoever. Otherwise, legal
action may be enforced.
