How Vision System Works

In today’s world, with the improving technology, we have access to almost anything. Technology has helped us in many ways, such as computers, cameras, robots, and many more machines. Within the technology we use, there is a system called vision system, which is mainly used to improve quality or automate production.

Usually, a vision system includes a camera, that serves as an eye for any machine and it helps us with many features. For example, in production, vision system helps us collect critical information and eradicate errors. It allows the manufacturer to detect errors in manufacturing process, which lowers the damage cost of manufacturing. Since vision system is mostly used for online inspection, it also improves productivity and customer satisfaction. It allows the user to perform complex tasks with high speed task and accuracy. Today, vision systems are used in robotics to do basic tasks such as picking parts, placing components, or dispensing liquids (A Teledyne Technologies Company).

There are several types of vision systems, used in appropriate applications but they all have the same basic functions and elements. All of these vision systems involve different type of sensors to capture different objects and are installed inspecting software to help analyze the information once the information is captured. As each vision system has its own advantages and disadvantages, or even the same features, it is important for us to know which vision system is suitable for which application. Without considering such factors, using the wrong vision system could lead us to get incorrect information or false rejects or false positives (A Teledyne Technologies Company).

An example where a vision system could be used would be in robots. It allows a robot to identify and analyze a single object. With a vision system, a robot could see objects by having the system collect the reflective light from the object, form an image with the information, and perform whatever it is supposed to perform. This process is done by the help of many other software installed within the system and the robot along with other hardware and electronic devices. When collecting the image of an object, the robot is forming an electronic image by a bunch of pixels already stored in its memory. Furthermore, the binary number within the pixel represents certain wavelengths. Then these binary number form an image according to the amount of light the robot collected (Raunekk, 2009).
