Chapter 1 "what is morality?" of "Elements of Moral Philosophy" by James Rachel's begins by striving to define morality. Morality is defined as principles concerning the distinction between right and wrong or good and bad behavior. When speaking about morality it is challenging because there are so many possible and rival definition that exists therefore the common ground can be defined as only the "minimum conception". In this chapter it gave an example involving a handicap child who was born without the cerebrum and cerebellum. This topic struck a great deal of controversy and ethicist number of questions. On the one hand, the benefit arguments stated that her organs would have been worthless without the ability to interact with the world. The other side argued that it was wrong to use a human life in order to fulfill the needs of another human's need. We should not use people as a mean, however, I can understand where people would be coming from if they chose the benefits argument because that argument follows along the lines of the sacrifice of one for the good of many. One might argue that and some might see the benefits of the argument. The takeaways and highlights I have after reading this chapter is that moral judgments must be backed by sound reasoning. Generally speaking, an argument is sound if its assumptions are true and the conclusion follows logically from them. Morality requires the unbiased consideration of all parties involved.
