Action Plan

Program Rationale and Statement of Need- The school that I am implementing my Action Plan in has a large population of students that are college bound. The district has purchased Naviance, a computer program that allows students to plan their academic goals, research and apply to colleges. I decided to work with the sixth graders and perform a career development workshop designed around setting and obtaining your goals. When students are setting goals this allows them to have something to work toward and accomplish. This will motivate them throughout their academic career before they reach college.

Reference Point- The reason I decided to perform my 6th Grade Naviance Experience was to introduce this computer program to these students for the first time. They will be using this program every year until they graduate and each time they will be performing different tasks. This is their first year out of elementary school and now it is time for them to take their studies seriously. It is time for them to start thinking about their future and who they want to become. Goals are imperative and a great way to motivate students to succeed.

Program Goals and Behavioral Objectives- My goal for this program is to have students critically think about what they want for their future. I want them to set attainable goals and strive to reach them every year. Each year they will be asked to set at least three goals. Another component of this program is having students perform a time capsule activity. This is designed to have students think about the person they want to be while attending our school.

Subjects and/or Audience- I will be meeting with the entire 6th grade class and bring them into the computer lab. I will be pulling them out of study hall, Math Enrichment, Art, Music, and if needed an AIS class.

Description of the Action Plan- As the students enter the room I inform them to find a computer and log on using their name and student ID. I will then introduce myself and tell them where the guidance office is in the school. Since this is my first time meeting most of the students I will then ask them how they like 6th grade so far. As they are logging onto the Internet and the Naviance web page I will describe what Naviance is. Naviance is a computer program that they will be using throughout their middle school and high school years, not only in Sachem but many districts have it. They will be using it in middle school to set goals, to research careers, take inventory tests, and start their resume. In high school, they will be researching colleges and hopefully applying to them. Today we will be using Naviance to work on goals. I will ask the class, "Does anyone know what goals are?" After their responses, I will re-state that goals are something you work at to achieve. My next question for the class is "Do you know what short-term and long-term goals are?" After their responses I will then describe the difference and state that goals setting is important because it allows us to work towards and attain something we want to achieve. Goals should be specific, attainable, realistic and have a time frame.

Then we will log on to Naviance/Family Connection. When we are successfully logged on students will click the About Me tab, they will go under Success Plan and click goals, and then they will be directed to a screen that allows them to enter their personal goals. When all students are on the same page, I will inform them that I want them to enter three goals. I want one short term, one long term, and one they can choose. I want mostly academic goals, and they must be appropriate. I inform them that their parents have access
