Racism is discrimination based on the belief that some races are by nature superior to others (The Merriam-Webster Dictionary). According to our class it is racial prejudice combined with institutional power. With these definitions in mind, is it possible for a Black person to be racist? Unlike, other class members I believe Blacks can indeed be racist. Even though they may not have the power to act on it, does not mean they cannot discriminate.
Laura who just recently arrived from Africa and is probably on of the truest Africans in our class, admits she can be racist. How is it that African-Americans born and raised in America can argue with her? I have even heard of Blacks who discriminate against their own race. Whether it is out of confusion or to feel comfortable with themselves, they still do it. It makes them feel superior, it is sad that it has to be towards their own race.
Beliefs on race depends on every individuals definition of race. In my opinion, racism is discrimination and prejudice. I have never combined my definition of race with power. Just because you feel superior to someone does not mean you are. I wish people would understand this. In this world everything is either Black or White. What happens to Hispanics? We are a combination of both . I am as much African as I am European. So where do I fit? At times I wish I had a place, other than just being stuck in the middle.
It is a true shame how Blacks and Whites only worry about who is Whiter and who is Blacker. I believe you are both just as racist and just as wrong. It may not have begun this way but it is the case now. If the roles would have been switched years ago then Blacks would have done the same. This world revolves around money and power. Our ambitions can drive us insane, no matter who we are. As long as being racist can make us feel better than someone else, then we can all be racist.
