Dear Prince Escalus,

I, Juliet of the Capulet family, am writing to you in regards to the punishment for the crime that Romeo Montague has committed. He killed my cousin, Tybalt, who killed Mercutio, a person of your blood. He should be punished for what he has done, but not in such way that I must lose him because he and I are now married. I do not want this problem to come in the way of our true love. Therefore, I ask you to fine Romeo for the trouble and chaos that he has caused. Do not be too harsh because he has made your job easier by doing as the law says, killing Tybalt for the justice of the death of someone with your blood, and he is my husband now, which makes our families united.

Romeo’s punishment should not be so harsh because by killing Tybalt, he made your job easier since that is exactly what you would have had to do. Tybalt killed Mercutio during a fight, so Romeo killed Tybalt because he did not deserve to live. I recall you yourself saying, “Romeo slew him; he slew Mercutio. Who now the price of his dear blood doth owe?” (Shakespeare III.i.91-92). Prince, you yourself said that Romeo killed the man who killed Mercutio. You do not know what to do and who to punish for Mercutio’s death. I also know that Montague goes on to say, “Not Romeo, Prince; he was Mercutio’s friend. His fault concludes but what the law should end, The life of Tybalt” (Shakespeare III.i.193-195). Romeo and Mercutio were best friends and Romeo’s crime did the law’s job which was to kill Tybalt for killing Mercutio. I agree with Montague because Romeo does not deserve to be punished for something that would have happened no matter what because Tybalt was going to die for what he did. Romeo just made it easier and killed Tybalt before you had to. Instead of banishment, Romeo should just be fined because in the midst of all the problems, he did cause chaos on the streets; to make it up, he should help the town by paying money. Therefore, Romeo should be forgiven for killing Tybalt because he did what had to be done and made it easier for everyone by getting it over with.

Because Romeo sought justice for the death of someone with your blood, he should not be severely punished and should rather be fined. After the fight, when you were all trying to figure out what to do, you said, “My blood for your rude brawls doth lie-a-bleeding” (Shakespeare III.i.199). Your blood is dead because of Tybalt, not Romeo. Romeo has avenged Mercutio’s death by killing the person who killed him. I do not think you should punish Romeo for bringing justice to your family. Romeo has not done anything wrong, rather he has made a mistake. The mistake is why he should be fined because he needs to pay for what he has done but not so severely because he only did it out of the goodness of his heart. Therefore, Romeo should not be banished or badly punished and should be fined because he avenged the death of your blood.
