South Carolina starts a new season with a new head football coach. Steve Spurrier is his name. His lifetime record is 142-40-2, which is a winning percentage of .777. He is Carolina's 32nd head coach. He is looking forward to changing the Gamecocks around to a better team. He has nine returning starters on offense and eight returning starters on defense. Coach Spurrier says, "They have three keys to victory, they are; no freebies, keep Blake Mitchell off his back, and stop the run on defense."

Spurrier loves to pass the ball and spread the defense out to set up the good running game. Carolina's new offensive scheme is called, "Cock and Fire". The gamecocks play in the South Eastern Conference, which is by far, one of the toughest conferences in college football. They also have a very tough schedule playing seven top twenty-five teams during the season. So far this year, Carolina is 1-2, losing to both Georgia and Alabama. Gamecocks won their season opener against University of Central Florida.

Carolina has nine freshmen starting this year. Mike Davis, starting tailback is a true freshman out of Columbia High School. Blake Mitchell, a sophomore, starting quarter back has thrown for a little over 600 yards in the first three games. Their defense is really struggling with the run but will come around soon I hope.

I asked one of my friends how many games the thought Carolina would win and he said, "They will go 7-4 and will play in a January first bowl game" If they do, it will be a very good change for our football team. I also think the gamecocks will do well this year. South Carolina will play in a bowl game on January 1, 2006. We will have a lot of learning to do but we will have a great football franchise in the future.

Spurrier said on www.uscsports.com, "That Carolina's "Cock and Fire" offense can't afford to misfire."
