Team building helps the organization to realize it goals and objective since the employees are able to work together in unity. Where there is a strong team, each employee focus on achieving his/her part hence becoming more productive. As a leader in State Health Department office, I have purposed to build and develop a strong team. There are different steps that I would take in building and developing a strong team in the organization. I would also conduct behavioral event interview to ask questions that would help in recruiting the personnel who is competent for the position.
The first step involves organizing, planning, and structuring the department to its maximum potential. These will help in subdividing the department into sub-team with different goals. Each sub-team will have a leader to oversee the operations of the sub-team are run effectively. The selected leader should have the ability to handle individual issues in the group. The second step is to create a mission statement that contains the organizational values and goals. The values and goals in the mission statement should be meaningful to the employees. Another step that I would take is to ensure that there are motivations and appraisals to the best performing department. This will encourage the employees to work harder in order to be awarded hence realizing a strong team (Quick, 1992).
Behavioral event interview (BEI) is a kind of structured interview mostly used in the process of hiring new employees. This interview focuses on gathering a person's past behavioral information. The interviewer asks unrestricted questions, which helps in determining the employee's behavior in certain situations (Boyatzis, 1982). These questioning helps the interviewer to ascertain the interviewee's competence. As I conduct BEI, I would ask the potential employee to explain what makes him/her to think he/she best fits the position. The way they answer such question would explain their competence and self confidence in handling the mandate given to them.
