The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time

Other than being some of the most brilliant people in human history what do the following have in common: Albert Einstein, Thomas Jefferson, Michelangelo, Isaac Newton, Andy Warhol, and Bill Gates? They have all been speculated to have some sort of autism. There are a few types of autism, but I will be talking mainly about Asperger's because the main character in the novel The Curious Incident of the Dog in the Night-Time suffered from Aspergers's.

The book was about a fifteen year old boy named Christopher John Francis Boone he "knows all the countries of the world and their capitals and every prime number up to 7,057. He relates well with animals but has no understanding of human emotions. He cannot stand to be touched. And he detests the color yellow." The book starts out with Christopher finding a neighbors dead dog with a garden fork through it his counselor tells him to write a book about the murder of the dog and his hope to solve the mystery. So Christopher snoops around trying to find clues about the dog. He eventually finds out that his dad killed the dog and he also found out that his mother is not dead like his father told him. So Christopher is scared that his dad is going to kill him like he killed the dog. So he runs off to London all by himself to live with his mother.

Autism affects 1 in 166 children and only $15 million goes to research where 1 in 25,000 people are diagnosed with leukemia and over $300 million is spent on research. Though I do not hold a medical degree, the most likely way to stop Autism would be through the controversial stem cell research.

The symptoms of aspergers are:

Social problems: problems interacting with others. For example Christopher would hit people when he was touched.

Repetitive behaviors: like watching a video over and over.

Preoccupations or rituals: for example Christopher needed to know the schedule when he got up.

Trouble communicating: Christopher did not understand human facial expressions or sarcasm.

Talents: many kids with aspergers have a great talent in an area like math as did Christopher.
