The House on Mang Street

Esperanza father is a big influence on her life. Esperanza father had to come to American and find work so that he could take care of his family. In the chapter "Papa Who Wakes up Tired in the Dark", Esperanza father gets a phone call and he is told that he has just passed away. Poverty cause Esperanza father to have to leave Mexico to make a living. Esperanza looks at how her father had to choose between his family and a future for his children. He chooses to have a future for his children who have to be living in poverty but also being happy with them. Esperanza father sold house in order to make a living for his family. Poverty and ethnic background which he was a Mexican cause him to have to get the first job that he could in order to support them. In the chapter "No Speak English", is where Esperanza father came to America and couldn't speak English and the only thing he ate for three months were ham and eggs. Esperanza father a disadvantage because he didn't know any English and that made him stick out to the community (S. Cisneros page 77). Esperanza father shaped her identity because she didn't want to live in poverty all her life. Esperanza was determining to get off Mango Street and dodge poverty.
Poverty enables Esperanza and her family the joys of life for example, the family couldn't enjoy family vacation so they had to take walks in the garden and the only day the family got to go was his days off which was Sundays (S. Cisneros page 86). Poverty also takes away time from families because of poverty Esperanza father had to work six days a week instead at home spending time with her and his family. In the chapter "Bums in the Attic", Esperanza says" I don't tell them I am ashamed-all of us staring out the window like the hungry. I am tired of looking at what we can't have" (S. Cisneros page 86). Esperanza wants to have the fancy homes, cars, and cloths but poverty (the killer) will not let them leave Mango Street. Esperanza and her father relationship is that she sees her father as a hard working man and that he has provided for his family after leaving her home land. Esperanza wants to leave and make something out of her life like her father did and for that she looks up to him for that.
Esperanza mother reminds her that she could have been somebody. Esperanza mother tell her to stay in school and then tells her that the reason why she didn't stay
