General Purpose: To demonstrate a funny story that makes a point about life

Introduction:

Everyone loves a funny story. Old men will sit around in circles for hours telling the same stories over and over again. Children will ask the fathers, grandfathers, and uncles to tell the same funny stories over and over again. You can also use funny stories to help drive home a point in a way that people remember and it sticks with them. This gives them a connection that is hard to break away from. When they think of the funny story you told they will, a lot of the time, have an automatic association with they point you tried to make or the lesson you tried to teach.

There are 4 parts that I think through when it comes to a funny story.

Body:

1. The introduction

a. This is important. You can lose an entire audience really quickly if you do not have a good introduction.

b. There are 3 important parts to the "intro"

i. What are the moving parts?

ii. What are the details you do not want to forget?

iii. How do I point this towards the end without giving it away?

2. Build the tension

a. Building the tension is the part of a story that most people forget?

b. Think about the best movies you have ever seen. They built tension inside of you. You couldn't wait to find out what was going to happen next. How was it all going to come together? What is the ending?

c. This is also where you can lose an audience and they will tune you out. Too much tension is a bad thing. You have to be able to tell when you are losing them.

3. Tie it together

a. You have introduced the story and you have built the tension. They know you are going somewhere.

b. Give them the ending. Let it simmer. Let the room do the work. You just bring it home.

4. Land the plane and get out.
