Warming Up: Not Always a Good Thing
Global Warming: the issue that is becoming a bigger problem as every day passes and continues to go unspoken about. Many people are ignoring the Earths' cries for help, but if we continue to avoid the subject, we will not have a planet left. It is hard to comprehend the damage that our everyday goods and leisure items are causing, but we, as a planet, need to stop to smell the roses and realize that we are slowing dissolving our very own ozone layer. Luckily, the United Nations has taken initiative and become part of the IPCC. Their top climate official is Yvo de Boer.
The United Nations is taking the issue very seriously within the past few weeks. They are part of what is known as the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. This panel was also the co-winner of the Nobel Peace Prize, which only helps their credibility on helping save the planet. The article notes that the IPCC is working on document that will help summarize the overall effects of Global warming and what precautions the planet can take to help slow down the process. The panel is to come to an agreement on a summary of about a 25 page document containing information regarding Global warming. This means that everyone on the panel will have to come to some sort of middle ground on what to leave in the document and what to take out. But the more intense discussions will probably come from the debates of whether or not the information left in will help their case as much as possible. IPCC believes that the main problem is the emission of Greenhouse Gases that humans are putting out into the environment. In case you are unfamiliar with the term, Greenhouse gases are gases that absorb radiation: a gas such as carbon dioxide, ozone, or water vapor that contributes to the warming of the Earth's atmosphere by reflecting radiation from the Earth's surface.
The document that the IPCC is trying to conjure together has several problems within. Many fear that there is not enough factual evidence to back their theories up and are afraid that people will not support what they know without the correct information. After viewing the IPCCs' process, another group known as the WWF international felt that the IPCC cut out some of the important information about CO2 and other gases. "'Governments cut vital facts and important information' during the negotiations." (USA TODAY).
The article states that it is "criminally irresponsible" to ignore the issue that is going on concerning Global Warming. The main idea is to bring awareness of the issue and help bring everyone to an agreement that
