I chose to read Winning With Integrity by Leigh Steinberg, because I have a passion for the professional sports industry. I have spent most my life involved in sports or watching sports. I have dreamed of being a professional athlete for years, who hasn't?
The Public always seems to see the one side of a professional's life. We always seem the glitz the glamour fame and fortune. What they don't see is how an athlete's life is a business and they are always trying to sell themselves to a pro team and the public eye. This book also showed what really goes on in day to day decisions and operations with agents, lawyers, fans, endorsements, family and money. Steinberg takes you through his 5 steps to success with athletes orientation, preparation, positioning, the encounter, making the deal.
According to Steinberg, professional athlete entrepreneurs need to develop business plans that maintain integrity and honesty. A sports agent might have been able to help in this situation, by offering expert advice, whereas a lawyer would have been involved in monitoring financial exchanges.
I have learned from the book that values, integrity, and honesty between clients and agents is essential for the success of both in question. This book and relates to sales and marketing of a product. The products for sale are the Athletes. It is a similar process we need to know they self, know our product, know our inventory, make the deal, keep good vendor relations, and find ways to get more to your customers. It was very interesting to read about the Professional Quarterbacks that Steinberg helped get some amazing contracts, what they went through, and how they turned out in the NFL.
