In the readings of the Tanglewood case, I feel that the company strives for employee contribution for the growth of the company. The company, as a whole, depends on structure and guidelines from the associates to stay competitive in the retail market. In this case, strategic staffing is essential for the business to meet the needs of the consumer in their target area.
The question whether to acquire or develop talent within the company becomes a decision that should be made independently per circumstance. For example, there is a position opening for a department manager in soft lines and, that is when the strategic thinking comes into play. Is it better to promote within or hire outside the company? Are there qualified associates that are familiar with the product? With inside promotion, will there be financial saving or spending? There is almost always someone ready to take the next step in their career, so there are employees who are qualified for the position. The employee has had the training required for a new associate and will required very little training for the position, and in that situation, a financial burden wouldn't come into play. If promotion within the company is practiced that would have a greater impact on the moral of the employees.
There are advantages and disadvantages to hiring yourself or outsourcing for employment. An advantage to hiring yourself is possibly a simple one; you can target a specific group of applicants. But the disadvantages are greater, spending money for a newspaper spot that may not get a response to the position, more time spent on the interviewing process, and unqualified applicants responding to the ad. Outsourcing to hire has the ability to reach more people who may have an interest in the position. This could be considered an advantage to the company and would have a better response from the target group.
External or internal hiring would have the same effect as acquiring or developing talent of the position available as well as hiring yourself or outsourcing. All three decisions work together in some way. With using these steps together would save time and money for the business.
Tanglewood seems to work with a core workforce within their company. There are a certain number of employees for all departments that work together. The core workforce allows for a more dependable environment. Having a flexible workforce would not accommodate the needs that are required of
